Once upon a time, a very, very long time ago....... (OK, let's skip that part)
After matriculating in 1977, I enrolled at "Dokkies" (Durban Onderwyskollege) and spent 6 months trying to become a teacher before finally realizing that I was definately not teacher material and completed a Secretarial course instead. I found a job as a secretary and was bored stiff for 2 years. I then joined Richards Bay Minerals as an Industrial Relations Assistant, but for some unexplainable reason the "2-year job itch" set in again and I left RBM to join the Municipality as Secreatry to the Town Treasurer. I got married in 1983 and resigned in 1984 to start a family. After the birth of my second son, I completed a National Diploma in Marketing Management and was fortunate enough to be employed by a Durban based company to establish a market for them in the Zululand Region. After 13 years in their employ the dreaded big "D" (divorce) steered my life in a different direction. I once again tried the "Secretary thing" with the Municipality. I was promoted to Procurement Officer, then to Assistant Head: Procurement and finally to Project Manager : Capital Projects for the Parks, Sport and Recreation Department. Now who would ever have thought I would end up constructing soccer fields and combi-courts in rural areas at the age of 49!! I love every minute of it. High heeled shoes have been replaced with rocky sandals, business suits have made way for cargo pants and jeep shirts, and I can tell you exactly what sunscreen is most effective in the Zululand sun.
I have not yet re-married. Both of my sons are doing well. The eldest, Carl (25), completed a BCompt in 2005, is currently employed by G4S as Financial Manager (East Coast Region) and is based in Durban. Byron (22) is a Pilot and completed his ATP (Air Transport Pilot License) in 2008 and lives in JHB. He is employed by Solenta (I think that is how it is spelled) and flies contract for UNICEF. He recently left for Abidjan where he will be based for the next 3 months.
Fluit fluit my storie is uit!! Looking forward to seeing you all in August.
